MusiqInTheMagiq: Review

The beauty of Philladelphian artist Musiq Soulchild's career is that he's stayed absolutely true to his namesake. With six studio albums over a 10 year span Musiq has done what a lot of artists are unable to do - make music. While other artists are solidifying their brands and relevancy with clothing lines, reality shows, fragrances, and beverages Musiq simply makes music. Imagine that. As he puts it, "I do my work and go home."

In today's music climate one wonders how to find the balance between the show and the business. Soulchild however, consistently has a "passion and authenticity in his approach."

With MusiqInTheMagiq, the newest collection in stores and iTunes Tuesday, May 3rd, the effect is quintessential Musiq, honest and reflective. A bit slower and quieter than his previous offerings Magiq is solid comfort food for the soul; a favorite sweater and the part of your day where you know what to expect.

While the lead single, "Anything" featuring Swizz Beatz is clearly designed to get the party going the remaining tracks slow it down and kicks everyone out the house. The result is organic mood music.

A few standouts include:

"Yes": A sweet song reassuring his love that no matter what the answer is yes.

"BackToWhere": Groovy little hook.

"Medicine": Melodic, beautiful harmonies.

"LikeTheSun": Classic baseline. Sure to be the favorite of the set.

Noticeably absent this time around are Souldchild staples; background singers and twins Ayana and Ayinke otherwise known as Aaries. Their harmonies have been sprinkled in every last one of Musiq's previous albums and most of his better songs. Musiq does his best to create the same feel without their voices but on this plate of soul food someone forgot the hot sauce.

Listen to the entire album on  CentricTv.com and tune in to CentricTv.com/CentricLive, Tuesday, May 3rd at 8pm est for a performance by Musiq Souldchild.

Do you like what you hear so far? Will you get MusiqInTheMagic tomorrow? Let me know.

  3. "a favorite sweater and the part of your day where you know what to expect." Love this line. Being a Musiq fan since day one, this line told me everything I needed to know about the album -- everything. I will be purchasing this one. I always buy his albums. I just don't think I'll rush out to get it, but in the next few wees for sure.

  4. Yup, that's how I feel. It'll grow on me eventually but it may not be in heavy rotation.
